Overview

AMERICAN SYSTEMS is seeking an experienced, part‑time Systems Architect / Subject Matter Expert (SME) with deep expertise in multi‑level security (MLS) systems to support the modernization and expansion of the Exodus Transport Network (ETN) at Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake, CA.

 

This role provides senior‑level architectural and technical expertise on a part‑time basis in support of Government‑directed mission needs.

Responsibilities

As a Systems Architect / SME at AMERICAN SYSTEMS, you will:

  • Design, assess, and support the implementation of multi‑level security (MLS) architectures across hardware, operating systems, applications, databases, networking, and cybersecurity domains, including performance tradeoff and risk analyses.
  • Apply expert‑level knowledge of Solaris 11.3+ with Trusted Extensions (TX) to support the modernization, sustainment, and expansion of the Exodus Transport Network (ETN).
  • Integrate Solaris Trusted Extensions, Linux, Windows, networking components, databases (Oracle/MySQL), and development tools to deliver new and enhanced capabilities, including PL‑3 to PL‑4 transitions.
  • Perform hands‑on system configuration, testing, installation, and modification activities to improve system performance, reliability, and cybersecurity posture.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, including CONOPS, SOPs, engineering change packages, risk assessments, and architectural artifacts, to support system operations and lifecycle management.
  • Support the operation and sustainment of MLS production, test, and development environments, ensuring stability, compliance, and security.
  • Evaluate technical proposals, architectural designs, and system alternatives for feasibility, technical soundness, and cybersecurity risk.
  • Provide objective technical analysis and advisory support to Government teams by clarifying design issues, resolving technical conflicts, and assessing contractor submissions.
  • Collaborate with system administrators, network engineers, cybersecurity personnel, and other stakeholders to improve system reliability, functionality, and security.
  • Deliver technical briefings and targeted training on advanced MLS concepts to support knowledge transfer and workforce readiness.

Qualifications

  • Active Top Secret (TS) security clearance
  • Master’s degree in a related technical field, or Bachelor’s degree with an additional 4+ years of relevant experience
  • DoD 8570/8140 IAT Level III–compliant certificationor the ability to obtain an 8140‑compliant certification within 90 days of start date
  • Solaris operating system credentials or demonstrated expert‑level experience administering Solaris and Trusted Solaris environments
  • 10+ years’ experience designing, developing, and administering multi‑level security (MLS) systems
  • 10+ years’ experience working with multi‑level operating systems, including one or more of the following:
    • Trusted Solaris
    • Solaris with Trusted Extensions
    • SELinux with MLS and/or Pitbull
  • Strong experience with hardware platforms and enterprise storage systems supporting secure, high‑availability environments
  • 5+ years’ experience administering Oracle databases and Solaris‑based platforms
  • 5+ years’ experience administering Linux systems in secure or enterprise environments
  • Demonstrated experience integrating multi‑level systems, including Solaris Trusted Extensions, Linux, Windows, networking components, databases, and development tools to support:
    • Future system expansion
    • Interconnection of PL‑3 customer networks
    • Transition to a PL‑3 data warehouse
  • Experience designing enterprise‑level architectures in DoD and/or SAP environments
  • Knowledge of network security tools, firewalls, and intrusion detection/prevention systems
  • Candidates must reside within approximately two (2) hours driving distance of China Lake, CA to support recurring on‑site program requirements.
  • This position is part‑time and compensated hourly, (typically 20–32 hours per week), with a targeted rate range of $110.00 to $125.00 per hour.

Pay Transparency Statement

AMERICAN SYSTEMS is committed to pay transparency for our applicants and employee-owners. The salary range for this position is USD $155,700.00/Yr. - USD $260,000.00/Yr. Actual compensation will be determined based on several factors permitted by law.
